Serious crimes decreased by two per cent – police

Serious crimes have decreased by two per cent at the end of October this year in comparison to last year, the police said in a statement on Wednesday. According to police, there have been 3160 reports of serious crimes made by October 31 this year, compared to 3229 during the corresponding period.
Some of the offences monitored are murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.
In light of the recent murder of 16-year- old Aubrey Benjamin of Dog Point, Region Seven, at a mining camp in the Cuyuni River, police have disclosed that murder has been on the increase thus far this year.
At the end of October 2012, the Guyana Police Force was investigating 114 murders, compared to 112 during the same period in 2011.
According to the statement, of the 114 murders; 50 were of the disorderly type; seven were committed during armed robberies; 23 domestic-related; and nine execution-type, while 25 cases remain undetermined.
In addition, there has been an increase by 15 per cent in robbery under arms up to the end of October 2012, with 854 reports compared to 744 for the same period in 2011.
The number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms at the end of October 2012 was 512 compared to 468 for the same period in 2011, an increase of nine per cent.
There was also an increase in the number of armed robberies where instruments other than fire arms were used by perpetrators.
These cases increased from 276 in October 2011 to 342 in 2012.
Four road fatalities have been recorded so far for the month of November.
